BEST PUBLICATION IN APPLIED PROBABILITY
AWARD
- Policy
- A single prize will be awarded once every two years
by the INFORMS Applied Probability Society (APS) to the person(s) making the
best contribution to applied probability.
- Award
- A plaque and a $1,000 check.
- Purposes
- To recognize outstanding contributions to applied
probability.
- Eligibility
- To be eligible for the award, a paper, book or set of
papers must meet the following requirements:
- The contribution must be on an applied probability
topic.
- The contribution (in case of a set of papers, at
least one entry of the set) must have been published during one-to-four
years prior to the year of the award.
- The contribution must have been written in English,
or must have accurate translation available in English.
- The contribution must have appeared in the open literature.
Procedures
1. The INFORMS APS Best Publication Award Committee will consist of
three members of the group. The chair of APS will appoint a new member to
replace the outgoing chair and appoint a chair from the two remaining
members of the previous INFORMS APS Best Publication Award
Committee (and the chairperson elect will appoint additional members
of either of the two remaining members of the previous INFORMS APS
Best Publication Award are unable or unwilling to continue to serve
on the committee). The remainder of the procedure will be
implemented by the INFORMS APS Best Publication Award Committee
(hereafter referred to as the committee).
2. The committee will use the following criteria in making
judgements.
- The extent to which the contributions of the nominee
advances the state of the art of applied probability,
- the originality of the ideas or methods and/or the
degree to which existing theory or methods is unified or simplified, and
- the new areas of application it opens, and
- the clarity and excellence of exposition.
3. Nominations will be solicited in the Fall of the year preceding
the year in which the award is to be made via notices in the Applied
Probability Newsletter, OR/MS Today, personal contacts and any other
means deemed necessary by the committee. Nominations will be closed
by June 15.
4. Nominations may be made by anyone, including the nominee, and are
made to the committee, and consist of
- a description of the significance of the nominated
work and
- copies of the nominated work.
5. Nominators and nominees will be held in confidence by the
committee, with the exception that they may consult (in confidence)
with anyone they deem necessary.
6. The committee will inform the INFORMS APS chairperson of the
name of the winner at least one month prior to the Fall INFORMS
meeting. The chairperson will in turn inform the winner, and ensure
that the plaque and check are available for presentations at the
Fall INFORMS meeting. The presentation will be made by the chair
of the committee at the APS meeting scheduled during the Fall
INFORMS meeting.
7. The winner will be announced in both the Applied Probability
Newsletter and OR/MS Today, and in any other medium deemed desirable
by the committee.
8. The decision of the committee is final. The committee is
authorized to choose the winner without review or approval of the
selection by the INFORMS APS or the INFORMS APS Council.
